“And when they say to you, ‘Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?”
Isaiah 8:19
In a culture fascinated by spiritual experiences and hidden knowledge, mediums often promise comfort, insight, and connection with the unseen. But beneath the allure lies a critical question: Are mediums compatible with biblical doctrine? Scripture doesn’t merely caution against consulting mediums—it’s condemned as spiritual rebellion. This article explores why mediumship stands in direct opposition to God’s revealed truth and why trusting in Christ alone is the only path to genuine spiritual clarity.
God not only explicitly forbade it, but He often deemed mediumship and spiritism as an abomination to Him. There are several places in scripture where God conveys this, including but not limited to Deuteronomy 18:9-13 and Leviticus 20:6. To be even more specific Leviticus 19:31 states to the letter, “‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.” That is pretty cut and dry right there, but let’s dive a little deeper into the spiritual dangers behind seeking a medium.
The biggest problem with mediums or spiritists is that they seek answers from spirits rather than God. Spirits are defined as anything without an earthly body that has a will, mind, and emotions, including Satan as well as demons. Now, all of heaven – angels and demons alike- know that God has declared mediumship or spiritism a sinful practice. The only spirits in direct rebellion to God and his commandments are Satan, as well as demons. So, which spirits are mediums or spiritists conjuring up?
Many mediums or spiritists don’t masquerade as these evil, scary people. I would say most probably do believe they are doing a godly act in “helping” people. However scripture states, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death (Proverbs 14:12). God’s thoughts are not ours, and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). So, if God says something or forbids something, no matter how you flip it or distort it, His words will always stand true. At the end of the day, when we all stand before Him in judgment, His words are the standard against which our actions, thoughts, and words will be judged.
Mediums are often so enticing because of what they know about us, especially in our most vulnerable states, when we’re so desperate for answers to our current pains or sufferings we may be experiencing. It’s funny because I do recall a story in the Bible, where in Jesus’s most vulnerable human state, that also seemed to be the time when Satan showed up to tempt the Alpha and Omega, God Himself (Matthew 4:1-11). It may be a different age, but Satan uses the same tactics and sadly, they often work on us.
So, Who holds all the answers and the comfort that we often seek through mediums? Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” He is “The Man” to go to! He’s not an option or a resource of ours, but rather the Source and the only answer for all of our issues that we may face in this life. Hebrews 1:1-2 says, “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” Not only does God speaks to us through Jesus but Jesus has a direct understanding of our problems and struggles. He’s called the “Perfect Priest” in Scripture for a reason, and He should be seen as such by us. “We do not have a high priest (Jesus) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who, in every respect, has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15).
If anyone knows the answers and the way to handle our situations perfectly, it’s Jesus. Not only does He know the answer, but He can also sympathize with our pains and often desperate feelings that cause us to seek answers to our heartfelt questions. So, seek Jesus to answer those questions and to remedy your pain, not mediums.
